What is the difference between shocks and struts?
First of all, it is important to note that not all vehicles have both shocks and struts. Some have just struts and some vehicles have only shocks. Shocks are part of the overall suspension, and a strut is a complete suspension assembly.
The shocks and/or struts in your car perform two functions. They dampen spring oscillation, and secondly, they aid in ride control. A shock absorber on an automobile does one thing–it keeps the car from bouncing. Struts are considerably different. Struts are a structural part of the suspension system and are mounted to the chassis of the vehicle.
When should shocks and struts be replaced?
Most vehicle manufacturers don’t specify an interval when they recommend strut replacement. Some shock and strut manufacturers recommend an interval of only 50,000 miles, but of course they have a financial motive for it. Usually we would tell people they can expect around 70-80,000 miles out of new shocks and struts. However, here is Michigan, with all of our potholes, shock and strut replacement can be considerably sooner. If you’ve gone past this timetable, it’s not the end of the world, but chances are if you get your struts replaced, you will notice a marked improvement in ride quality, handling, and even stopping distance.
Having your shocks and struts inspected regularly, including a test drive by one of our technicians, can be helpful to monitor the performance of your vehicle.
